Pedestrian Seriously Injured After SUV Crashes Into Downtown Ottawa Building

A serious collision in downtown Ottawa left a pedestrian badly injured late Friday afternoon after an SUV struck him and then crashed into a nearby building, according to paramedics.

SUV Hits Pedestrian In Downtown Ottawa

The incident happened near the intersection of Laurier Avenue West and O’Connor Street, a busy area in Ottawa’s downtown core. Ottawa paramedics said the vehicle involved was a grey Honda Pilot.

According to officials, the SUV left the roadway and went onto the sidewalk before hitting a pedestrian. The vehicle then continued forward and collided with a building located at 234 Laurier Avenue West.

The pedestrian, identified only as a man in his 20s, suffered serious injuries in the crash.

Pedestrian Taken To Trauma Centre

Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson Tyler Leslie said the injured man was transported to The Ottawa Hospital’s trauma centre in serious condition.

Paramedics described his injuries as multi-system trauma, meaning more than one part of the body was seriously affected. Emergency crews received the call at around 4:20 p.m. Friday.

The fast response helped ensure the pedestrian was taken for urgent medical treatment.

SUV Occupants Treated At Scene

Three adults were inside the SUV when the collision happened. Paramedics assessed and treated them at the scene.

No further details were immediately released about their injuries or condition.

Ottawa Police Investigating The Crash

The crash is now under investigation by the Ottawa Police Service. Officials have not yet released details about what may have caused the SUV to leave the road.

Investigators are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the vehicle’s movement, road conditions, driver actions, and any possible contributing factors.

Downtown Ottawa Crash Raises Safety Concerns

The collision has raised concern because it happened in a central area where pedestrians, vehicles, office workers, and public transit users are often present. Laurier Avenue West and O’Connor Street are both important downtown routes, making pedestrian safety a major issue.

Crashes involving vehicles leaving the road can be especially dangerous because people walking on sidewalks have little time to react. In this case, the SUV not only hit a pedestrian but also struck a building, adding to the seriousness of the scene.

Importance Of Pedestrian Safety In Busy Urban Areas

Downtown streets require extra caution from drivers and pedestrians alike. Drivers must stay alert, follow speed limits, watch for pedestrians at intersections, and remain aware of sidewalks, crossings, cyclists, and other vehicles.

Pedestrians should also use marked crossings, remain aware of traffic movement, and avoid distractions when walking near busy roads. However, sidewalks are supposed to be safe spaces, and crashes involving vehicles entering pedestrian areas often lead to severe injuries.
