Ottawa River Toddler Tragedy Leaves Community in Grief
A heartbreaking Ottawa River toddler tragedy has left the community shaken after a two-year-old child died following an emergency search-and-rescue response on Friday evening, May 8, 2026.
Ottawa Police said officers responded shortly before 7 p.m. to reports of a missing child in the area of the Kichi Zibi Mikan Parkway, which runs alongside the Ottawa River. When emergency crews arrived, the child was still unaccounted for, prompting an immediate coordinated search.
Emergency Search Launched Near Kichi Zibi Mikan Parkway
According to Ottawa Police, the search involved several police resources, including Neighbourhood Resource Team officers, Marine Dive Team members, the Air Support Unit, tactical officers, and assistance from the Gatineau Police Service.
Police said the child was spotted in the Ottawa River by the Air Support Unit approximately 40 minutes after the initial call. First responders brought the child to shore and began lifesaving efforts before the toddler was transported to hospital. The child was later pronounced dead.
Police Investigation Remains Ongoing
Ottawa Police described the incident as heartbreaking and said their thoughts are with the child’s family, loved ones, witnesses, and emergency personnel involved in the response. Support services have been made available to the family and first responders.
As is standard practice following the death of a young child, the Ottawa Police Service’s Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit and Homicide Unit are handling the investigation. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
