First Canada Grocery Benefit Payment Arrives This Week For Eligible Residents

CanadaCanada Grocery Benefit Payment arrives July 3 for eligible Canadians as new CGEB replaces the GST/HST credit.

The first Canada Grocery Benefit Payment under the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit is set to arrive this week for eligible Canadians, giving low- and modest-income households another source of support as grocery and everyday costs remain a major concern. The Canada Revenue Agency says the new benefit starts in July 2026 and replaces the GST/HST credit under a new name, while keeping the same eligibility, payment calculation, and basic structure.

Canada Grocery Benefit Payment Arrives This Week

Eligible Canadians are scheduled to receive the first quarterly Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit payment on July 3, 2026. The payment marks the first regular installment of the new program after the GST/HST credit was replaced by the CGEB in July.

The CRA says the CGEB is sent as quarterly payments. For 2026, the remaining payments under the new program are scheduled for July 3, 2026, and October 5, 2026. January and April payments were already issued as GST/HST credit payments before the new benefit name took effect.

What Is The Canada Groceries And Essentials Benefit?

The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit is a tax-free quarterly payment for individuals and families with low and modest incomes. It is designed to help people manage the rising cost of groceries, household basics, and other everyday essentials.

The federal government says the benefit replaces the GST/HST credit beginning in July 2026. Under the new name, the eligibility rules, calculation method, and payment structure remain the same as the former GST/HST credit. However, starting in July 2026, benefit amounts increase by 25% for five years, from 2026 to 2031.

Who Is Eligible For The Canada Grocery Benefit Payment?

Canadians are automatically considered for the Canada Grocery Benefit Payment when they file their tax return. The CRA uses tax information to decide eligibility and payment amounts, including adjusted family net income, marital status, and the number of eligible children under 19.

This means most eligible residents do not need to apply separately. The most important step is filing a tax return, even for people with little or no income. For people turning 19 during the year, the CRA says filing a previous-year tax return helps ensure the benefit can begin after their 19th birthday if they qualify.

How Much Can Eligible Canadians Receive?

Payment amounts vary depending on income, family size, marital status, and other factors. For the payment period from July 2026 to June 2027, the CRA says eligible Canadians could receive up to $679 if they are single, $890 if they are married or have a common-law partner, and $234 for each eligible child under 19.

These amounts represent annual entitlement guidelines, not necessarily the exact amount every person will receive in one payment. The CRA recalculates benefit amounts every July using information from the previous year’s tax return. For example, a 2025 tax return determines the CGEB amount for the July 2026 to June 2027 payment period.

Why The New Payment Matters Now

The Canada Grocery Benefit Payment arrives at a time when many households are still feeling pressure from higher food and essential costs. Finance Canada previously said food prices have risen faster than overall inflation since 2020, costing the average household hundreds of dollars more.

The federal government says the new benefit will provide relief to more than 12 million low- and modest-income Canadians. Officials also said a family of four could receive up to $1,890 this year when the one-time top-up and increased regular payments are included, while a single person could receive up to $950 this year when the top-up is included.

This Payment Is Different From The June Top-Up

Some Canadians already received a one-time transition top-up in June. That payment was part of the move from the GST/HST credit to the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. The July 3 payment is different because it is the first regular quarterly payment issued under the new CGEB program.

This distinction matters because many residents may see different wording or labels on their bank deposits. The CRA says the new benefit replaces the GST/HST credit in July 2026, while January and April payments were still made under the former GST/HST credit name.

How To Check Your Payment

Eligible Canadians can check their next expected payment date and amount through their CRA account. The CRA says users can view the status and amount of each payment for the year, along with their statement of account and payment schedule.

People should also make sure their direct deposit information, address, marital status, and family details are up to date. Changes in income, marital status, custody arrangements, or the number of eligible children can affect the payment calculation.

What If The Payment Does Not Arrive?

If a payment does not arrive on the expected date, the CRA recommends checking the status through a CRA account and making sure personal information is current before contacting the agency. The CRA also notes that if a quarterly payment amount is less than $50, the person may receive the full amount as one payment in July instead of quarterly payments.

Residents who filed their taxes late may also need to wait until the CRA assesses their return. If someone is entitled to missed amounts, the CRA says retroactive payments may be issued with the next scheduled payment.
